City Gallery will be temporarily closed for refurbishments from 20 November 2017. Reopening March 2018.

City Gallery Wellington is to undergo a refurbishment of its foyer and entrance, which will make it more accessible for visitors and enhance it’s connection with Civic Square.

The extensive nature of the work means that the Gallery will close from Monday 20 November 2017 until Friday 2 March 2018. It will reopen on Saturday 3 March 2018 with the exhibition This is New Zealand. The closure period has been carefully-timed and kept as short as possible to minimise the impact.

City Gallery exists to provide its community with access to exceptional art experiences. Visitor numbers have steadily increased over the past five years to more than 180,000 per annum and the refurbishment will further enhance the Gallery’s accessibility to these growing audiences. The changes will mean the Gallery is better equipped to welcome school groups and those with impaired mobility. The new entrance will enhance the connection between the Gallery and Civic Square, reinforcing the Gallery’s role as a civic space—all while celebrating the unique architectural heritage of the building.

Changes to the Gallery’s main staircase as well as a number of other building renewal projects to further improve accessibility will also be undertaken during the closure.

The Gallery Shop and Nikau Café will remain open.
