Te tūranga | The role

We are seeking expressions of interest in the role of Curator or Senior Curator Māori (Taonga), we welcome applications from all levels of experience and will equally consider applications for part-time or full-time candidates.

Working closely with our small, innovative curatorial team, including the | Te Ringa Auaha Director Art and Heritage, and wider organisation, you will play a key role to bring the best heritage and storytelling experiences – to the heart of Wellington City.

As a curator, you will keep your finger on the pulse and develop innovative exhibitions of, or including, Māori taonga and work closely with other kaitiaki of Māori heritage. You will have a high level of cultural competency in engaging within our communities and are committed to increasing public access to knowledge of Te Ao Māori. As a key connector, this role will work closely to develop and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with mana whenua and tangata whenua.

Wellington Museum Te Waka Huia o Ngā Taonga Tuku Iho will be embarking on a redevelopment of both its site and the stories it tells over the next few years, and you will play a vital part in helping to reimagine what this Museum can offer the city and its visitors. As Curator or Senior Curator Māori (Taonga) you will also have the opportunity to provide important curatorial support to visitor experiences developed for other Experience Wellington sites, including Space Place Te Ara Whanui ki te Rangi, the Cable Car Museum and Nairn Street Cottage.

Ngā tino pūkenga me ngā wheako | What we would like to see from you

  • Strong knowledge of taonga Māori
  • Experience working with and have existing relationships with taonga Māori collectors
  • Solid cultural competency in tikanga Māori and te aō Māori
  • Curatorial experience developing exhibitions from vision to delivery.
  • Experience with different forms of media to showcase exhibits.
  • An understanding and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the role of biculturalism in our Whare Taonga
  • Familiarity with a collection database is preferable but not essential

Wellington Museum Te Waka Huia o Ngā Taonga Tuku Iho is a dynamic cultural presence in the capital city of Aotearoa New Zealand, with a focus on telling compelling stories about Te Whanganui a Tara. It is a venue for the research, display and debate about the history of our whenua and hapori whānui.

Wellington Museum Te Waka Huia o Ngā Taonga Tuku Iho is part of a group of six cultural institutions (primarily funded by the Wellington City Council); also including Capital E Nōku te Ao, City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi, Space Place Te Ara Whanui ki te Rangi, Cable Car Museum and Nairn Street Cottage. This group connects as Experience Wellington: working with and for Wellington to create remarkable experiences for our audiences that generate vitality, strengthening the city we love.
