Wellington Museum Te Waka Huia o Ngā Taonga Tuko Iho has received a new seismic rating and has been assessed as an earthquake-prone building.

Our people and visitors are our priority. There is nothing within the assessment that indicates the building is unsuitable for occupation. We’ve also received a separate risk assessment of secondary structures within the Bond Store and there are no areas of significant concern for immediate attention.

Our regulator and landlord, Wellington City Council, has issued an earthquake-prone building notice which allows seven-and-a-half years to plan and carry out remedial work. We’ll be taking this once in a generation opportunity to re-imagine Wellington Museum Te Waka Huia o Ngā Taonga Tuko Iho as a reflection of the stories of the people of our capital city while strengthening is carried out.
